The theme of our discussion is "Good and Bad theatre". You know, there are a lot of people who regard the theatre as a great form of art that has no dark sides. But others think that it's quite an old-fashioned kind of entertainment, that even isn't worth spending your free-time.
What's the theatre for you? What do you regard as BAD theatre? and what's GOOD theatre, according to your opinion?

I'd like to comment upon the following statement
Quote (Rina)

I don't think we can regard theatre as an old-fashioned form of entertainment. Yes, nowadays, having TVsets at home we don't go to the theatre so often as people did earlier. But that doesn't mean that Theatre as a form of Art is dying. No, it is developing! To my mind, it's becoming even more exalted as people go to the theatre not simply to waste their time but to get aesthetic pleasure.

I suppose many of us agree with me that for successful perfomance actors must be talented and everything must not look unnatural! And Bad theatre means quite expensive tickets. They cost more than cinema tickets. And of course theatres which show new plays are usually only in big cities.

biggrin i can say that it's my favourite topic biggrin
Good or bad? Who knows? wacko
Firstly, i want to ask you why do you think theatre can be bad? It is bad, because we haven't many talented actors? It is bad, because the entrance ticket is too expensive? It is bad, because you didnt find your favourite cakes in the theatre cafe in break? Why it is bad, tell me.
But now we have a bit another opinion to this problem...Is theatre old-fashioned kind of entertainment. I DONT THINK SO If it is so, why cant we say the same about circus, about exhibitons, museums and so on? wink

I completely agree with Sasha! It's silly to think that theatre is an old-fashioned place where just men and women of 40 can go. That is not so! I know many young people of our age who adore theatre and can't imagine their life without this fabulous place. And I share this point of veiw, though I can't brag about going there too often:(
By the way, Tanya, I don't undersatand you...what did you mean when you said that BAD theatre means quite EXPENSIVE tickets??? So, as far as I can see, you think that for instance Bolshoy theatre is the worst one??? I don't think so at all! Moreover, I must admit that very often there are expensive tickets just in GOOD thatres:)

No-no, I don't say that it's bad. i've just shown you 2 different points of view))))))) As for me, I LIKE it, really))))
or, may be, i'm mistaken and you didn't ask ME, but a hypothetical person who thinks this way?
confused ))))))))))))))

Quote (Megastarosta)

absolutely agree with you)))))))))))))

Quote (Assa)
No, it is developing!

yep))))) it becomes more and more... unconventional, may be? But some people tend to think that what we call "developing" turns out to be... vulgarism? showing off? breaking the foundations? degradation? or smth else of this kind... I think you don't share their opinions, but still, are they right in any way?

Quote (Tanya)

indeed, "bad" theatre usually means very cheap tickets))) and the theatre of high quality usually means high prices))) to my mind, there's so-called "direct dependence". )))))))))) can you agree?)))))

YEP!!!! I even dare to say that nowadays we can see, that the spectators in the theatres are about our ages))) and the people of 40 rarely go there just because they have little time - they have to work, to take care of their families and so on... )))

If I'm not mistaken, you're speaking about some modern theatres, yeah? Well... I've never been to such perfomances but they say that vulgarism and showing off really prosper there! But in any case I believe it isn't right to speak about degradation. It's a development. But the direction is different.

What is bad theatre? I think bad theatre is a theatre which is full of falsehood. Actually, I don't like to speak about some conventions, such as price, famous or unfamous actors, plays and playwriters, you know. In my opnion, theatre is another reality. And this reality is great, it shows us the best and worst things of our life, it reflects our world. So, if you really want to see a good play, you have to be ready to spend your money. I completely disagree, that theater is old-fashioned. Theatre is classical, and classiс lives forever.

In Vino Veritas...

I can't quite agree with it. I think it depends. Some modern writers create a real good comedies, which concerns urgent problems and there is not vulgarism there.

It's very silly, I think. in the croud of young people in the theatre you hardly meet a person of 60.

For me bad theatre is the theatre where acting is artificial, script is boring and actors are non-qualified and untalented.

yep!! absolutely agree!!!! at least I don't understand those who say "I hate modern theatre, 'cos it's vulgar". hey, there are many, MANY styles, a great deal of different kinds of plays and it's a great mistake to unite them in only one category!)))))))

Good theater means good performances. not that performances that are dull and sometimes even stupid. I mean that performances that call MASTERPIECES.

Not long ago I visited "Nutcracker". My impressions were rather mixed. In the whole performance there is one, but very serious disadvantage - everything was modernized. As for me I like modern plays, but I firmly convinced that classic ought to keep its origin form ivariable.
