Dear Netters, please do not confuse these two simple words.
The word 'date' means a certain point in the calendar, whereas the word 'data' is plural from the word 'datum'.
The word 'data' means 'gathered evidence, facts, statistics'.
I hope this will help you avoid the misuse of these words.
So, in the sentence 'According to preliminary date Russian population....' you can see this mistake.
