The main character of W. Shakespeare’s tragedy “Timon of Athens” is considered a misanthrope; he was much influenced by Apemantus, a contentious cynic who was always full of caustic remarks and acerbic statements. Apemantus’s vitriolic replies usually put an end to any congenial conversation. He could clearly see the insidious thoughts of all Timon’s friends who seemed to be gregarious and genial. Timon himself was at first an affable citizen known for his largess and amiable attitude to anyone in need. He was completely naïve and deceived by the avuncular appearance of his hangers-on. As a result Timon’s altruism led him to poverty and belated insight into the true nature of his false friends. The chicanery of his creditors drove him insane. He became utterly belligerent; everyone was outraged by his pejorative words. There was no philanthropy left in him.
