Vincent Willem van Gogh (30 March 1853 – 29 July 1890) was a Dutch post-Impressionist painter whose work, notable for its rough beauty, emotional honesty, and bold color, had a far-reaching influence on 20th-century art. After years of painful anxiety and frequent bouts of mental illness, he died at the age of 37 from a gunshot wound, generally accepted to be self-inflicted (although no gun was ever found). His work was then known to only a handful of people and appreciated by fewer still.

Oh, have you seen the video which is called "Starry night. Interactive version"? it is an interactive reproduction of the picture you've posted above made by Greek engineer and painter. He managed to animate and visualize the picture using touch-screen and special programs. The video is fascinating, a little bit surrealistic, enchanting and enigmatic. Enjoy!

Vincent van Gogh's tragic life is popular today as any sacred legend which, apparently, is necessary to people more, than light of its stars and sunflowers. The hungry, almost beggarly existence full of loneliness and contempt of people around, turned back already world agiotage and interest in the 20th century.
