Do not try to hide the truth -that's the rule to be followed when one has to deal with teens. I suppose it's necessary to discuss modern literature even in school - it is a chance to look at the sociaty you live in, to judge and make conclusions. These books reflect our reality and we shouldn't ignore them. Never close your eyes pretending that nothing bad is happening around you! One more argument. Teens are not so stupid but of course they tend to overestimate things. At the same time they are able to understand the messages of these books, especially when somebody helps them do it. Just imagine - a teenager reads a scandal modern book and interprets it in his own way, may be even not completely understanding what was meant by the author. They get it wrong and it affects their life-vision and attitude to certain problems. But if teens study this book at school, discuss it with their teacher they are more likely to understand it correctly. If a teacher is able to diminish negative influence the book can cause, it should be done!
