Teenagers are so affected that for them it's better to read books which were censored.

Do not try to hide the truth -that's the rule to be followed when one has to deal with teens. I suppose it's necessary to discuss modern literature even in school - it is a chance to look at the sociaty you live in, to judge and make conclusions. These books reflect our reality and we shouldn't ignore them. Never close your eyes pretending that nothing bad is happening around you! One more argument. Teens are not so stupid but of course they tend to overestimate things. At the same time they are able to understand the messages of these books, especially when somebody helps them do it. Just imagine - a teenager reads a scandal modern book and interprets it in his own way, may be even not completely understanding what was meant by the author. They get it wrong and it affects their life-vision and attitude to certain problems. But if teens study this book at school, discuss it with their teacher they are more likely to understand it correctly. If a teacher is able to diminish negative influence the book can cause, it should be done!

That's it! We've come to understanding that it's better to shield our children from negative things so as to protect them from harm. But don't they realize the life is not so bright? Sure, they do. And sometimes they can interpret it even better than adults. A young mind is flexible and active (though at times it behaves like a sponge) and teens really appreciate what they have grasped themselves. They should read modern literature to shape their point of view, their stable position and principles in life. More than that, modern stories are more comprehensible for them. They depict the world at the present stage of its development. You shouldn't be surprised when a teenager doesn't understand The Storm by Ostrovsky and the reasons for Katherine's suicide.

It seems that studying classical literature at school is not aimed at its understanding by teenagers, but at developing their future personal culture and taste for literature as a kind of art.

Doesn't their future personal culture include understanding of literature, be it classical or modern? I don't think that we are living in the times of 'art-is-for-art's-sake'. How can you shape your cultural tastes if you don't get at all what the book is about?
