| Hello, everybody! I would like to talk about the following: when you were little kids, what did you want to be when you grow up? What was the job of your dream - a driver, a cosmonaut, a doctor or a superhero? Have you plans changed? Why? As for me, I wanted to become a veterinarian. I thought it was easy and interesting to work with various animals and cure them. But now I understand that a vet may face a lot of problems in his or her career. Firstly, not all pets are calm and easy to treat. A vet may have to cure an exotic or a very agressive animal. Secondly, vets may drive considerable distances to farms and villages and work outdoors in all kinds of weather. Thirdly, vets may have to euthanatize (humanely kill) an animal that is very sick or severely injured and can't get well. When a pet dies, a vet must deal with the owner's grief and loss. Being honest, I still think that I can become a perfect vet, because I do like animals and understand them very well. I have perfect knowledge of biology. I'm not afraid of blood, my nerves are steady, my hands are strong. But as I am preparing myself for a teacher's job I must forget about it. So, my plans have changed... I just understood that if I have a chance to become a good specialist and contribute to the society then I should first serve people. And teachers serve others like nobody else because they provide youngsters with useful knowledge, educate our minds and souls, teach us to think, to speak properly, inspire us on self-development, help to become better and to find ourselves in this unpredictable and cruel world. But if I am banned from the RSU I will go to the State Agriculture University and fulfil the dream of my girlhood.
It is not human to be without shame and without desire. (Ursula K. Le Guin)

| I remember I had a childhood dream of my future job. Like many boys in my neighbourhood I wanted to be a driver. My friend and I often travelled with his father in his lorry. He drove about the town and the nearby villages everyday, and whenever we were free or skipped school, we got into his lorry and explored the area. We also helped to carry and load boxes, flour or sugar bags, and the like. The best time was when my friend's father's lorry was loaded with boxes of sweet lemonade. There was always a chance to 'boroow' a bottle or two. Then, when I was in the tenth grade, I fell for English. ... Now, I am an English Teacher

| When I was 5 years old, I wanted to be a writer. Now I don't get very good marks for my essay, so I think that I wouldn't be a good writer. Then when I realized that it wasn’t for me, I wanted to be a doctor. Then I had to undergo medical tests, I was so afraid that I changed my views. The third and the last wish was to be an interpreter, but after studying in the University for 3 years I understood that it is not for me. Now I want to be a teacher. I hope, I won’t change my opinion

| And do these dream jobs exert any influence on us? Or they're just child's humours? I don't think that many people fulfill their wishes and dreams, I even have doubts that they remember what excited their imagination in the childhood. But maybe it's normal and... the bus is just gone?

| I wanted to be a doctor. Just like my parents. All the time I heard different medical terms at home and I thought it's very interesting profession. But now I understand that I don't want to be a doctor because it's very hard to help people everytime. So I've changed my mind.

| Is that the only reason? Or have you chosen your one way and don't want to tread in your parents' footsteps?

| In my childhood I wanted to become a ballerina. I watched different ballet performances with my mother and I forgot my life. I was dreaming that I would dance with famous ballerinas. But now I think that ballet isn't interesting for me. Probably, because I go in for modern dances. Also, I wanted to become a singer. Now I think that I would like to act on the stage. And I want to act on the stage in my present life. Because, I have "grown on the stage". The stage is my life!!!

| lovefootball), this is the main reason. But I also understand that I want to study English. And did you decide what profession you'd choose when you were a child or did you change your interests later?

| Oh, when I saw that my peers had certain aims and dreams, I got a bit frightened because I didn't have any childhood dream! I wasn't interested in anything particular and had no idea of what I would do. Maybe, it's OK, but I was constantly trying to strike out some idea concerning my future. To tell the truth, I failed))) Have things changed? I can't say for sure. But now I can say for sure that I'm on the right side of the post.

| Dear Lovefootball), Is it now your dream to become a teacher of English like me? Or do you have any other aims?

| I don't have any dreams concerning my future profession, really. All I know is that I love what I'm doing now. It's better not to take a long shot. There's now a period in my life when I feel something is changing inside of me. I'm sure I won't choose any other direction, but I can't say anything more particular at the same time.

| Still I doubt you don't have any idea of what you would like to do when you are 30-35 years old. What do you think you may be happy to do? I resist to believe that you have never thought of your favourite occupation. What are your parents? Relatives?

| My favourite occupation is languages and I don't want anything else now. Who knows what can happen to me? Besides, working conditions in our country are so unpredictable that it's useless to plan anything particular. My parents are lawyers but we've never thought this profession is suitable for me. I just have quite different interests and inclinations.

| Convincing words... I hhave always tried to follow this principle - I can discuss, imagine, advise, show but never impose my opinion about what occupation to choose. Some years ago I told my children one thing - you need university education, choose the major that will be a long intellectual drive, learn to think and make informed decisions, your job will find you.
