Dear Netters, we all often want to start an utterance with the words of honesty and truth. In English there a few set phrases that can convey "по правде говоря". E.g.:
- To tell the truth,
- To be honest,
- Frankly speaking,
- Honestly,

When you use the phrase 'True to say' in this meaning, you make a mistake. The reason is that this phrase is just part of the bigger phrase 'It's true to say so' that has no meaning of "по правде говоря".
So, the starting phrase in the following sentence is a mistake:
'True to say, i like both the author and the character'.
The author should have started with 'To tell the truth...'or any other phrase from the list above.
