Rap music began in the Bronx area in New York. But Jamaica had an enormous influence on it too. The DJs just talked over records, shouted to the dancers in time with rhythm of the music-the firt form of "rapping". Now rap is a kind of music that is very popular with young people. There are a lot of foreign rappers: 50 Cent, Snoop Dog, G-Unit, Eminem, Dr.Dre, DMX and others. In Russia people usually listen to Guf, Slim, Kasta, Basta, SD and others.

So, what is your opinion about rap?
Do you listen to rap music?
What are your favourite rappers?

I don’t like rap and never listen to it. Still I think such music is certainly better than modern pop-songs. Rap melodies are rather simple but words are worth listening because rappers touch upon serious social problems in the texts they compose.

You are right, most rappers touch upon different social problems in their texts. But is it bad? Some people prefer listening to pop music but often there is no meaning in the texts of pop songs. Though I listen to rap songs not often, I think it's good that people compose rap songs with such texts because sometimes this is the only way to touch upon some problems. Another thing, rappers compose rap songs and write texts on their own. I think we can meet such a situation in morden showbisuness rarely.

I prefer rap music to other genres.Rap is not poetry.Rap is not music.Rap is different from arts we prefer. It can be lyrical or provocative and aggressive, but it is always unusual.Rap singers are unexpected, but they are not stars-they are simple people who want to tell us about their feelings in their lyrics. My favorite Rissian rap-singers are GUF ans Noice MC.Their songs are full of life.Their lyrics are full of scence. It is only my opinion and it should be divided into six billion

Wow, why do you have an objection against pop music? Isn't it too radical? We shouldn't grumble so much)) What exactly do you find reproachful? Melodies, voices, style, images, lyrics? Or maybe this industry as a whole? Is it too commercial and callous? Or maybe, the problem is the lack of true talents?

As for me, I think that pop music can different. Let’s take, for example, Madonna and Paris Hilton. They both sing pop-songs, but the differences in talent and the quality of produced material are obvious…

I hate Russian pop-industry; first of all, because the absolute majority of our singers appear on the stage with the help of money (rich parents or sponsors contribute to this). I’m sure that it’s easier for truly talented people to become popular abroad.

Also Russian music stars use phonograms all the time and avoid live concerts. Foreign singers delight the audience with their own voices even at very important ceremonies.

It’s more likely for foreign singers to write both music and lyrics. Our pop-stars are in most cases unable to write verse and can’t play any music instruments. That’s a pity.

I respect rappers because they all (in Russia and abroad) sing self-made songs and do it directly, without changing the timbre by special computer programs.

Rap music also can be different. For example, there are a lot of obscene words in some rap songs but not in all. A lot of rap songs are really good (there are no obscene words in them and they have very beautiful melodies).
By the way, what do you think about russian and foreign rap music? Is there a big difference between them? What do you prefer?

My husband sang Rap songs when he studied at school and when he was a student. He tried to mix Rap music with Chill or even classical music. I can say that it sounds nice but some of his track i prefer to listen even nowadays.)

Yeah, a lot of young people (like your husband))) compose rap songs, write texts and this is the way they live and express themselves. For some people, it's just a kind of hobby. But still do you think Rap music is popular currently? Another thing, there is a deep-rooted opinion, especially among adults (that are mostly grown up on rock music))) that this kind of music is often just for problem children. Do you agree with that?

I don't think that rap-music can be a problem for young people. Why not? No two minds think alike)) The same is about tastes. They differ, and if you like listening to rock-music that does not make it the best music ever. And I suppose adults are so much against rap-music not because they used to listen to rock-music. Rap is a very modern style hence apart from "different" sounds, it also involves unusual clothes, unusual behaviour and so on. These are probably the main things that make adults be so cautious concerning rap.

Agree, they regard it as another subculture and I think a mere mentioning of this word almost paralyses all parents with panic fear)) (And not without reason I should say)) So coming back to the point I can say that today we're absolutely free in music preferences irrespective of our origin, education and upbringing. It was a discovery even for myself but in summer I started to listen to rap music and to my surprise I as the saying is settled down to it. My first astonishment is easy to explain - I used to underestimate this style and consider it as something unworthy but this opinion turned out to be superficial!

I find this style extrememly energising and sentimental, often pleasingly aggressive and eye-opening. Often, the lyrics involves social, political and cultural issues. I often listen to rap and feel like dancing when driving.

Agree completely but at the same time I have a feeling that the work of some rap musicians is a little bit "over"...Well,it's obvious that rap as a trend is accompanied by various stereotypes not much to choose among them I should say) I mean for example the presence of classy cars and not less classy girls in great numbers in videoclips) Speaking frankly I'm not a sophisticated specialist so correct me if I'm mistaken but isn't it mere peacockery? Upon my word I often suspect that such stamped singers don't feel their music but just blindly copy this very model.

I think I can't totally agree with you because this can't be related to all rappers and their music. Here I'm talking about "the presence of classy cars and not less classy girls in great numbers in videoclips")) We can see all this mostly in american videoclips but not in russian. Quite the contrary many russian rappers try to show an ordinary life of people (not rich ones) that also have their own problems - that's what their songs and videos are about. But I can't deny that there are many rappers that just want to show off))

I believe, every person, who understands something in this world, has his/her favourite music. He or she does not only listen to it when there is free time. He lives in the world of this music. As you can judge, such style for me is rap. I call it "style" because it is not simple lots of songs for me. It is mode of life.
