Really, this subject will do more good than bad, but what do you think about who will teach it? I think a traditional study of the Gospel could be a wonderful class! Just reading, learning to understand the language, the images, the symbols and interpreting them all. Belief or faith may come later, but I don't know whether such a course ought to teach faith.
H'm, it's strange but the first thing that came across my mind when I say your comment was our home reading lessons, really) Actually we do the same...I mean we read, try to interpret the author's message, discuss possible variants, argue, searh for symbols and connections with modern life. So don't you see a threat here? I'm afraid the whole idea may turn into another class in literature. Is it OK? Is it true tolerance and the demonstration of our respect towards other confessions?
By no means so! Understanding the Bible can start with interpreting its messages in all of the writings it includes! But understanding and interpretation are not that easy! It should be a knowledgeable teacher that can explain things and relate them to life experiences and faith matters. But such classes ought not to be faith-oriented! You are right saying that it may look like classes in literature studies and text interpretation. That's excellent
