Some time ago I watched an interesting film about how European farmers protect their gardens from different agricultural vermin. One man has invented his own way of catching slugs – he fills a large bowl with mixed beer and sweet syrup. Fat slugs, attracted by the scent of sugar, ignore vegetables and fruit and decide to drink this substance first. Of course, they get drunk, fall asleep at once and can’t crawl away. Therefore the farmer kills them all easily. In this case alcohol is used as a weapon against those creatures who eat our harvest. Is this severe or normal? Is there a difference between giving your lovely pets some beer for fun and giving alcohol to parasites (with a belief that the latter ones must be destroyed as quick as possible)?

It is not human to be without shame and without desire. (Ursula K. Le Guin)

Well, it is cruel but it isn't regarded to be so. The same thing is with ordinary poison. The point is that there is only one alternative: either they destroy our crop or we get rid of them, it's simple. And of course there's a great difference!! I can draw a parallel: we kill hens, pigs, cows and take it for granted though they are living creatures but at the same time we slobber over cats, dogs and guinea pigs (very often even running to extremes!).

Of course there is a huge difference between giving our pets some beer for fun and giving alcohol to parasites. In my opinion, giving our pets some beer is cruelty but giving alcohol to parasites is a different situation. I don't think it's very bad to do it if we just want to ameliorate crop capacity. Well, a lot of people use such a method in their agriculture (I mean they poison different parasites).

What do you think about the people, who euthanatize their pets (for example, if a pet is incurable or he is dying)? Is it the right way? And what do you think about the people, who euthanatize their pet because they don't need him/her anymore?

Ohhh, I think in both cases it's the most humane way out. When an animal is dying, you should abstract from your personal wishes and feelings and take a sober view of things. If every breath brings it nothing else but acute pain, be merciful. Such a decision is not easy but remember that while you're consoling yourself, your pet is suffering badly. As for the second case I think it's better to try to look for another master first. But if there isn't any...I can't say for sure but maybe it's better to put an animal to sleep than doom it to starvation.

No doubt animals have their own right. And the first right is to respect them. And we should take care of these living organisms.

That's it but where is the border between respect and baby talk? Besides, a lot of people are absolutely sure that this respect is not more than one of the whims of the rich who die of boredom and scratch their heads over the ways of spending huge sums of money. Of course, it's a stereotype but its absurdity doesn't exclude its urgency and after all such celebrities as Paris Hilton intentionally create the images of light-minded girls, not overburdened with brains who roll in wealth and luxury and do nothing. Their pets are just accessories for them. So, the question is as follows: is it respect? Dogs and cats are taken care of but they are the part of one's image. Physically they have everything and we can't blame their masters for neglect but is it enough?

I think there is nothing to say about such people as Paris Hilton because, as it has been noted, a dog for them (or maybe other pets) is just another detail in their image. But I'm sure there are a lot of actors (speaking about famous and rich people) who indeed take care of their pets, respect them and do not show them off.

Oh, I've accidentally seen a part of a TV show recently....I'm amazed to the bottom of my heart, really)) I saw an absolutely maniacal young lady who hired a pet-fashion expert for her little toylike dog! The specialist tackled the problem with enthusiasm) She had to spend a lot of time in various top-rank shops (Prada and so on) and left them overloaded with packages. That woman bought even sunglasses for the dog! Well, what can I say about the whole situation: people are free to spend their money anyhow and I am not against such hobbies)) It's just a little bit funny and unusual for me)

In my opinion, domestic animals have there rights because people account responsibility for them. People shouldn`t be violent with pets. They are our little brothers. On the other hand, I can`t understand those people who take their pets to beauty salons and make them different and expensive sets and hair-dos. To my mind it`s a waste of money.

Do you agree that we are responsible for those who tamed? Do you think that people always comply this rule?

I agree with you. You are right. Do you think that animal protection organizations are important nowadays?
