A drug which helps a heart to repair itself after a heart attack could be available in 10 years, the researchers at University College London say. They carried out several experiments on mice and claim that this specially devised drug, if used in advance of a heart attack, is able to "prime" the heart for repair. The scientists have found that certain cells in an adult body start “falling asleep” and the chemical (thymosin beta 4) was used to “wake them up”. It resulted in the cells’ ability to grow new heart tissues. The British Heart Foundation described repair as the "holy grail of heart research".
