Ex-mayor of Moscow will be granted a monument
Sculptor Zurab Tsereteli says a monument to ex-mayor of Moscow Yury Luzhkov will be soon set up in the capital.

Russian BBC service states the famous sculptor is planning to do it himself if no one supports this idea. Tsereteli stressed that he is very grateful to Mr. Luzhkov for the fact that “he gave freedom to all artists and cultural workers”. “He built galleries, many museums, he helps writers. God grant the new mayor the same chivalrous spirit that Mr. Luzhrov has!” added Tseretelli.

Moscow municipal duma considers the idea of the monument unethical. According to moral principles and current legislation monuments to living people are forbidden.
However, there already exist two unofficial monuments to ex-mayor in Moscow. Both of them belong to Zurab Tsereteli. One of them depicts Mr. Luzhkov as a yardman, the second – as a sportsman.

Of course, art should be free but there are the limits one can't go beyond...And to tell the truth, I don't think that art and politics go together well.

I agree with Mekavaen to a great extent. I think that if an artist decides to create a monument or any other work of art, he/she has a right to do it. This decision is merely an artisitic interpretation of a fact, event, national leader, and the like based on different reasons. When the monument is created, Tsereteli will decide what to do with it. To erect it in any place in Moscow depends on the local authorities. The law that forbids such things is really obsolete. Remember Madame Tussaud's Wax Model Museum - it is a great thing and nobody in the west ever says that it is unethical.
Personally, I don't care much for Luzhkov's political displacement. This well illustrates a sick ploitical situation in Russia. I can't go into all of this and interpret who has done what. But I often remember the case with Khodorkovsky and his Ukos. These cases are different but there is the same political cause. Unfortunately, this is another sign that democratic institutions in our country have never worked and will never work. BAD!

dont Art is a unique form of self-expression.
We can freely observe, discuss, criticize or admire sculptures, paintings, literary works of different styles and genres. But does anyone have a right to prevent a talented sculptor from following his inspiration and setting up a new monument?
Tsereteli wants to give birth to a new masterpiece? Great. Then let him do it.
I can't understand why Moscow municipal duma finds this idea "unethical". What "moral principles" are they talking about? Two similar monuments already exist in our country. Why should the building of the third one be forbidden then? The only reason here might be the protest of Mr. Luzhkov. But if he supports the idea - what's the problem?
Mr. Luzhkov has become one of the most vivid and well-known symbols of modern Russia and modern Moscow. He is a gifted politician, writer, sportsman, scientist (!!!!!). Yes, he has been criticized for some slips but in comparison with the profits his leadership has brought to our capital they seem almost nothing. For many people his resignation has become a real shock.
I think, Mr. Luzhkov is an outstanding personality and his monument will become a new remarkable sight of our carital.
