Dmitriy Medvedev and Viktor Yanukovich congratulated each other on a simultaneous ratification of the Black Sea Fleet Agreement by the Russian State Duma and the Ukranian Rada. According to the agreement, The Black Sea Fleet will be "stayed” in the Crimea after 2017 for 25 years, and then this agreement can be prolonged for another 5 years.

The agreement to extend the lease on the Russian Black Sea Fleet's base in Ukraine is a landmark document for both countries, Russian Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov said. "The Black Sea Fleet acts as a guarantor of security both in the Black Sea and in the Mediterranean Sea," Serdyukov said.

According to the minister, the agreement opens up serious opportunities for modernizing the Black Sea Fleet and its entire infrastructure. Besides, this international agreement secures social and economic stability and restores the historical balance in the region.
