What can characterize Russian mentality brighter than our cuisine? It's well-known that its dishes are healthy and delicious. They are easy to cook and don’t require special skills or exotic ingredients. Vegetarian dishes, meat, buns and rolls…the list is endless. As we all like to eat well, we need starters that can make our mouth water. Some starters are rather spicy, I should say. They often consist of various seasonings and spices such as horse-radish, mayonnaise or garlic.
We have different soups as a main course. Russian cuisine was forming taking into account our severe climate that required hot dishes. Food was to supply people with energy and warmth. The soups we eat seem strange to foreigners but I’m sure most Russian men adore hot red-beet soup or cabbage soup. Our climate is also a reason for the abundance of meat products. I guess only Russian cuisine boasts a great variety of meat dishes: chops, rissoles, goulash… We are also fond of fish as our country is rich in different kinds of fish. And of course we shouldn’t forget about baked goods that have a special place in our cuisine. At all times guests were welcomed with homemade bread in Russia and if hosts baked something, it was a sign of their prosperity. Russian women are so inventive and generous that they are famous for their pancakes, kulebyaka, pies and honey cakes. In old times corn was the main product, that’s wy all women were able to bake pies that had different fillings: berries, mushrooms, cottage cheese or fish.
I mentioned vegetarian dishes at the very beginning and I should say that Russian vegetarian cuisine is highly developed because of the fast we observe. Lenten porridge, cookies, stewed and salted vegetables are very popular in our country. As you can see Russian cuisine characterizes us as generous, hard-working and hospitable people. Another important thing is that orthodox cuisine doesn’t allow gluttony. All dishes should be tasty but plain, for example, millet porridge, stew or fried meat.
I really like Russian cuisine! (especially mashed potatos with some pickles :)) Unfortunately, most Russian people don't cook it often- they prefer buying prepared or tinned food. But I think even if we have a hasty schedule, we just mustn't forget our national cuisine! We can bake pancakes, pies that had different fillings: berries, mushrooms etc and other delicious dishes of Russian cuisine at least at weekends.
A lot of different kinds! I would always wait for boiled eggs, sausages, some vegetables and a cup of coffee or tea in the morning. I like it if there are flowers on the table for decoration. At lunch I will forget about the world if I have a good vegetable soup or or a chicken soup, following it a plate of rice with meat and vegetables, and of course a glass of kompot to finish with. In the evening some pasta or any kind of potatos will make me a happy person, a glass of yorgurt will make my stomach calm and satisfied. But this doesn't jhappen every day, I often skip meals due to a hasty schedule.
Yum-yum, what you've described is so delicious!!! No wonder, they like our cuisine. It's even more than just cuisine, it's an art of hospitality. And what dishes do they like most?
As I have read the article, I have really seen a little bit of myself. I feel I am so Russian that I want to rush out of the office and have some hot vegetable soup, mashed potatos with some pickles, salted mushrooms and a glass of tea to cover it all. My experience of hosting foreigners at home says that they all like Russian cuisine.
