Acting and Animation
By Doron A. Meir

"An animator is an actor with a pencil", goes the oldest and truest animation cliché. Not "a draftsman that acts", but first and foremost - an actor. If you're trying to tell a story through a character, inevitably you're an actor. The only question is whether you are a good actor or a bad one.
My feeling is that in the past few years, while there's been great progress technology-wise, the art of acting in animation has been abandoned. Compared with the acting quality of characters such as Shere-Khan (The Jungle Book), Captain Hook (Peter Pan) and others, today's characters are pale, dull, and lack personality. In better cases, an exceptionally interesting voice-talent saves the day (Robin Williams as the genie in Aladdin); but usually the script alone is responsible for providing the characters with some sort of personality.

In the various internet forums one can find threads concerning software, design, textures - some even talk about movement - but it's rare to read something about acting. I haven't yet seen a comment saying something like "the animation is good, but the character has no personality". It seems that the level of expectations is so low, that it's enough for an animator not to make technical errors. Would you consider praising a writer simply because he made no spelling mistakes?

I liked this article and wanted to share it with you! And what do YOU think about it???

As a fan of different kinds of cartoons, I have found the blog of Doron Meir and read it. The only thing I want to say is that I deeply wonder how a person, who draws such pictures of different styles could say such a thing? At first I thought that he is a narrow-minded American, who doesn't know much about cartoons and animation except some stupid channels with some stupid and primitively drawed cartoons, I must convince. But after reading the information about him and watching some works of his, I was shocked. I'd like to tell him as a reply of his article or whatever it is: you can draw so well! Then draw a new hero, with a vivid character and appearance!

well, I really can't agree with this statement. Today's characters are as vivid and expressive as "yesterday's" ones and even more. Just remember enchanting King Julien from "Madagascar" - how can this marvellous lemur be called "pale or dull"????? I quess that the author of this text should get rid of some prejudise against modern cartoons.

As for me, I am also in doubts about the sincerity of the author. His arguements seem to be more like the statement: "Earlier the grass was greener and the sun was brighter"...I don't believe that modern animation lack truely impressing characters.

Nothing of the sort! There have always been cartoons which are badly wrought. And there will be always animation which will struck our imagination, touch our feelings and fill us with admiration.

Well, hard tp say though my first reaction is quite definite - the author sounds angry. Acting is really a talent, we all inherit this ability. The social environment in which we talk, move, work, eat or sleep causes us to act out various roles. I can continue the thought from the article - A teacher is an actor with a book and pen. Acting has always been and will always be good or bad, captivating or mediocre, traditional or unconventional. I have a hunch that the author isn't honest. Modern digital cartooning is a just another genre of animation it it has the right to exist and has nothing to do with acting. Nobody has abandoned the art of acting in animation! The art of animation has become more diverse and with technology at hand it is bacoming even more daring. Take digital games - it is virtual acting, acting digitized and animated, personified and still so easy to appreciate. Acting will never be brilliant if there is nothing to express - verbally or non-verbally! Without the script, the main message, the chosen view or gesture acting stops to exist. What I am saying is this - it all depends!
