Modern students and the Internet

I’ve made a piece of research about student’s usage of the E-net. And I can say that the results were not so shocking for me, on the contrary, the situation is quite natural and predictable. The questions were:

·         How often do you use the Internet to do your homework?

·         What is the most challenging factor about the Internet?

·         Do you prefer writing papers and essay by yourself or you just copy-paste it from the E-net?

·         How often do you REALLY need the Internet to do your homework?

·         Can you imagine your life today without the Internet?

I’ve asked 10 students from different groups, and here is the statistics – 50% use the E-net every time they need to do their home assignments. Another half of those asked use it "quite often”. The most challenging thing about the Internet is, according to my research, ability to communicate, to watch stream video and audio, downloading different media and software and of course preparing papers and essays. 90% of those asked said so. Concerning the third question the situation is fifty-fifty – one half copy-pastes their papers every time they need to write them and another one writes it by itself only when the topic is interesting for them.  But to be honest, the answers to the fourth question surprised me by their honesty – 60% said that "frankly speaking, never” and 40% said that they really need World Wide Web to cope with their university work once or sometimes twice a week, or even thrice a month. And finally practically everybody can hardly imagine his or her life without staying online today.

To generalize it all I can report that the Internet now plays an important role in every student’s life as well as in our everyday existence, but the faster and the more wireless, if it can be said so, the technologies become, the lazier we become. Today it’s easier to download a track in a couple of second, rather than to search for it throughout your hard-drive and it’s faster to use Wikipedia than to look for an encyclopedia in a book-shell. I cannot say whether it is good or bad, but the fact still remains.
