Theatrical drama, as we understand it today, is based on three things. Firstly, there must be an actor or actors speaking or singing. Secondly, there must be some dramatic conflict. Thirdly, and just as important as the other two, there must be an audience following the progress of the drama. Cinema isn’t like theatre. A film without any conflict does have a right to exist (like National Geographic ones). And the audience isn’t so important. If it is a movie, you can watch it at home alone or go to the cinema with some crowd of people. The film won’t become better or worse. It’ll be the same. Every time you watch it it IS the same. And the performance is another. It is a bit different every time you watch it. Some people say that with TV sets at home and occasional visits to the cinema we no longer need theatre. Such people don’t understand that the theatre is the parent of all dramatic forms. And, more than that, cinema and theater are two DIFFERENT Art forms.
Hi, there. I have read your entry a few times and would like to say this. When you say that "every time you watch a movie it IS the same", I think you are slightly wrong. For me it's like reading the same book over and over again, discovering new thoughts and ideas, going deeper into the nature of conflicts or just pondeing over the same scene or the same piece of description. That's just one of the ways how one's artisitc interpretation of life gets into you and evokes a reaction that you may have never experienced before. You watch for details, repetitions, hints, listen for the intonation, the language... It's like in life - could-you-say-it-again idea.
