Is it possible to ban Skype in Russia?
Some days ago the representative of Federal Security Service (Andreechkin) made an official proposal to forbid several on-line services (Hotmail, Gmail and Skype), because they threaten the security of our country. The problem is that the encryption of these services prevents the operational search activity, but it isn’t the only problem. There were attempts to do it in 2009, when Russian operators launched this initiative, because such services are almost free. It’s just unprofitable for monopolists. It’s a well-known fact that there are a number of such limitations in China, but I’m firmly convinced that our president who is addicted to modern technologies will never approve it. Do you think that technological progress is more important than safety or they can’t be compared?
We already have examples of what such prohibition may result in. The whole world wonders how people live in North Korea where not only the Internet, but also mobile phones can’t be used openly. It’s absurd, I think.
Technological progress and safety mustn't be compared. If our FSS wants to ban Hotmail, Gmail, etc., it means that in our country the level of the Internet-security system is low. And, of course, it's better to ban smth. than to make it safer.
