It`s wonderful place! This is a cathedral for the Russian Orthodox Church and at the same time it is said to be a symbol of liberation from the Mongolians who had governed this land for a long time. The formal name is “Pokrovskiy Cathedral”, but since Saint Basil who had a strong influence over the Russian people was buried here, the present name has taken roots. Nine onion shaped roofs in various sizes are of a typical Russian design to let piling snow fall off.
It'a a very interesting video. Being citizens of Russia we should know the history of our country's main cathedral. Unfortunately, i never had a chance to walk into the Cathedral but still it produced great impression on me.
In 1555 the Cathedral of the Intercession of the Holy Virgin was one the highest cathedrals* in Russia (65 m) but of course even the Dormition Cathedral in Ryazan knocks spots off it being 72 meters high (built in 1699). The iconostasis** of the Dormition Cathedral is also impressive - 27 meters.
------------------- * The highest cathedral on Earth is the cathedral in the city of Ulm (Germany) - Ulmer Münster, the height of which is estimated to be 161,53 m. ** The iconostasis in the Dormition Cathedral is also the highest in Russia. But the most spacious iconostasis is found in Spain, in Santa Maria Cathedral.
This is one of the greatest cathedrals not only in our country but in the whole world. I believe everybody admires the architecture of the building, its accuracy and colorfulness. Unfortunately I have never been inside the cathedral but the video convinced me in its perfection even more.
