This is my first serious step in interpreting for the Ryazan art school. This article is about two very famous artists: Leonardo Da Vinchi and Albreht Durer. It was written in 1978.
How instantly these two masterpieces, Leonardo’s Virgin of the Rocks and Durer’s Adoration of the Magi, seize our attention; yet how differently each claims our interest. In a general way, the difference consists in this, that one is full of mystery, the other of clear statement. Leonardo has imagined a scene which appeals to our own imagination; Durer has invented one that delights our understanding. The former’s is a dream-picture, the latter’s a wonderfully natural representation of an actual accident. In a word, while Durer has tried to make everything plain t our eyes and understanding, Leonardo has used all his effort to make us forget the facts and realize the spirit that is embodied in them
This contrast would alone make it worth while to compare the two pictures; but there are other reasons. These two men were contemporaries: Durer, the greatest of German artists, most representative of the Teutonic mind; Leonardo, the most remarkable example of the intellect and imagination of the Italian Renaissance. It has been said of him that ‘ he is the most thoughtful of all painters, unless it be Albrecht Durer’. So the fitness of comparing these two is evident.
Both Leonardo and Durer were men of striking physical attractiveness, great charm of manner and conversation, and mental accomplishment being well grounded in the sciences and mathematics of the day, while Leonardo was also a gifted musician. The skill of each in draftsmanship was extraordinary; shown in Leonardo’s case by his numerous drawings as well as by his comparatively few paintings, while Durer is even more celebrated for his engravings on wood and copper than for his paintings. With both, the skill of hand is at the service of most minute observation and analytical research into the character and structure of form. Durer, however, jad not the feeling for abstract beauty and ideal grace the Leonardo possessed; but instead, a profound earnestness, a closer interest in humanity, and a more dramatic invention.
«Мадонна в гроте» и «Поклонение волхвов», насколько мгновенно эти два шедевра притягивают наше внимание и насколько по-разному каждый из них пробуждает наш интерес. Вся разница заключается в том, что первый полон загадочности, а второй ясного смысла. Леонардо изобразил сцену, которая привлекает наше собственное воображение, в то время как Дюрер изобрел то, что восхищает наше понимание. И Леонардо, и Дюрер отличались поразительной физической привлекательностью, величайшим очарованием манер и слога, образованностью, будучи однажды хорошо обученными науками и математикой. Не стоит забывать, что Леонардо был так же одаренным музыкантом. Мастерство каждого из них в черчении было удивительным. У Леонардо оно проявилось в большинстве его рисунков по сравнению с небольшим количеством картин, в то время как Дюрер больше знаменит своими гравюрами из дерева и меди, чем картинами. Их объединяет умение непродолжительного наблюдения и аналитического исследования характера и структуры формы. Хотя Дюрер не владел чувством абстрактной красоты и идеальной грации, которое было присуще Леонардо, он отличался глубокой серьезностью и интересом к классической литературе, а так же наиболее драматичной изобретательностью.
