Experiment Nine - Polysemantic Words
Hey, everyone! I would like to show you how the word “court” can change its meaning in different contexts. I can give you eight examples so I hope the information will be clear to everybody.

1. A place where trials take place and legal cases are decided.

The will was read aloud in court.
Завещание было зачитано в суде.

2. The people in a court, especially the judge and jury.

A police officer told the court that he had seen Mr. Brown leaving the house.
Полицейский сообщил суду, что видел, как мистер Браун выходил из дома.

3. An area marked with lines where some sports are played, such as tennis and squash.

The hotel has two tennis courts.
На территории отеля есть два теннисных корта.

4. A king or queen, together with their family and their servants, advisers, etc.

He was an influential member of the court of Henry VIII.
Он был влиятельным человеком при дворе короля Генриха VIII.

5. Used in the names of large houses or blocks of flats.

They live at 27 Mallory Court.

6. When someone tries to impress or please someone because he wants them to help him in some way.

Politicians court middle-class voters.

7. To make special efforts to get something that will benefit you.

For years they had been courting influence in Britain’s major companies.

8. To behave in a way that is likely to bring a bad result.
