Hello to everybody: translators and interpreters, and to all those who are just curious! I’m going to give a piece of explanation on the different meanings of the word “capital”. Hopefully, you will be interested enough to provide your own contextual meanings or some rare collocations!
1. The city where a country or region has its government: In the Federal Republic of Germany, each of its constituent states has its own capital city. (В Федеративной Республике Германии каждая их составляющих ее федеративных земель имеет собственную столицу.) 2. The most important place for an activity or industry: Milan, Italy’s fashion capital, is also one of the European Union's most attractive tourist destinations. (Милан, итальянская столица моды, является также весьма привлекательной целью для туристов, путешествующих на территории ЕС.) 3. The large form of a letter, e.g. ‘A’ or ‘B’, that you use at the beginning of a sentence or name: In English, capital letters are used as the first letter of a sentence, a proper noun, or a proper adjective, and for initials or abbreviations. (В английском языке прописная (заглавная) буква ставится в начале предложения; имени собственного или имени прилагательного, производного от имени собственного; и используется для написания инициалов и аббревиатур.) (Adjectives are used in the same meaning.) 4. Money or property that you use to start a business or to invest to earn more money: In Marxian economics, capital is used to buy something only in order to sell it again to realize a financial profit. (В марксистской экономической теории капитал нужен только для того, чтобы приобрести что-либо, с целью снова продать, получив финансовую прибыль.) (Adjectives are used in the same meaning.) 5. The decorated top part of a column: One of the most remarkable designs of Roman capitals features leaves carved as if blown by the wind. (Один из наиболее примечательных узоров на древнеримских капителях включает в себя резные листья, словно раздуваемые ветром.) 6. make capital (out) of = to use to you advantage: The opposition parties are sure to make political capital out of the government’s difficulties. (Несомненно, оппозиционные партии воспользуются разногласиями в правительстве в своих политических целях.) 7. adj. Punishable by death: Capital punishment has in the past been practiced by most societies (one notable exception being Kievan Rus), although currently only 58 nations actively practice it, with 96 countries having abolished it.
