Funny facts About Reading

According to http://www.abebooks.com/blog/index.php/2009/02/12/25-random-things-about-reading/
While surfing the Internet I саme across the following: this list is called "25 Random Things About Reading”. Some of these facts are really entertaining. If you want to read all the random things, follow the link given above)))
1. Reading about yawning makes you yawn.
2. Books used to be shelved "backwards” with the spine facing the back of the shelf and the fore-edge facing out.
3. Research now indicates that the 4- to 6-year-old age range is the sweet spot for teaching reading.
4. On average across the world people spend 6.5 hours a week reading.
5. According to a study from Yale University, three-quarters of students who are poor readers in third grade will remain poor readers in high school.
6. It takes an average of 475 hours to write a novel.
7. Books used to be chained to the bookshelves in libraries.
8. On the average, a bookstore browser will spend eight seconds looking at the front cover and 15 seconds scanning the back cover.
9. Half of all books sold today are to people over the age of 45.
10. Adults who read literature on a regular basis are more than two-and-a-half times as likely to do volunteer or charity work, and over one-and-a-half times as likely to participate in sporting activities.
11. Women buy 68% of all books sold.
12. The page most readers lose interest at? Page 18!
13. Studies have shown that American children who learn to read by the third grade are less likely to end up in prison, drop out of school, or take drugs.
14. It is estimated that limited literacy skills cost business and taxpayers $20 billion in lost wages, profits, and productivity annually.
15. A bibliokleptomaniac is someone who steals books. One of the most famous bibliokleptomaniacs is Stephen Blumberg, who stole more than 23,000 rare books from 268 libraries. He had various methods for acquiring his estimated 20 million dollar collection, including climbing through ventilation ducts and elevator shafts.
Well, what do you think about it? Can you agree with some of these statements?

I liked the article. Everything is so true about us. On my part,t here is one possible explanation to some of the statements above.
- Reading sets our mind on creative and productive tracks
- Reading makes us think in terms of making the life around better in any way possible
- Reading books is food for thought, a thought is an impulse for a action, an action is a driving force of humankind

Do you think all kinds of literature can have such an effect?

Of course not. Reading stuff is absolutely different. Some reading stuff is antisocial. I don't know for sure. We should learn how to protect ourselves from bad reading stuff.

As well as from some TV programmes, films, habits or people. Of course, we can choose but it isn't so easy to protect yourself from any bad influence.

Fact 12 made me puzzled))) I can accept it if you read a thin book but what about "War and Peace"?)

Quote (Asya)
I've always been sure that women read more than men while men watch TV much more

Well, I thought that everything depends on another fact... I really believed that it's because they BUY more. Not read, but BUY biggrin But I guess I can't be an objective observer: my dad reads SO MUCH, that I will never agree with the fact that men read less that women biggrin biggrin biggrin

"On average across the world people spend 6.5 hours a week reading." So little!!! I'm shocked!
"Women buy 68% of all books sold." - I've always been sure that women read more than men while men watch TV much more.

That's strange, though may be based on statistical data. What if we say that men spend more time receiving information (reading or watching), whereas women spend more time talking and doing things about the house.
