Today, on
the second of February the nominees for the Oscar-2010 were announced. One
should mention that this year the nomination "The best picture of a year”
includes 10 nominees instead of 5 as it’s been before. So here they are: Avatar, Inglorious Basterds, Up, An Education,
Up in the Air, The Blind Side, Hurt Locker, District #9, A serious man, Precious
(Bear down! in Russian distribution). Certainly it’s evident that on the 7th
of March I’ll hear the phrase from the screen of my TV: "And the Oscar goes to…
Avatar”. Saying a few words about the film I may assure that this epic will
take the Oscar as Titanic did – both of them are masterpieces and the standards
of commercial cinematography. Some critics say that "Hurt Locker” may struggle
with Avatar, but it’s hopeless. I guess it may take a couple of Oscar, but not
the main one. Among others I may distinguish "A serious man” by Cohen bros. and
"Precious” that got the Grand Prix at the Sundance Film Festival (the main film
festival of American independent movies). Others are totally commercial
pictures. "Up in the air” was taken superbly by British critics, but it has no
chances. It’s hardly possible to imagine that Q. Tarantino with his "Basterds”
would get the Oscar. From the whole list I haven’t watched only The blind side
and An education. Despite this I think Avatar is he only picture to get the
Oscar. There should be no doubt about it. I also should mention that this year
the amount of "intelligent” movies nominated for the main Award is much less
than it was the last few years. Though 10 years ago the situation was the same
so we shouldn’t lose heart.
One more thing I want to speak about is
the nomination "The best picture in foreign language”. Traditionally this
nomination includes the best arthouse movies of the year. This time they are:
Ajami, The white band, The milk of sorrow, A prophet and The secret in their
eyes. Here is gonna be some intrigue at least – the struggle between each of
the nominees. Ajami got the Golden Camera at the Cannes FF, while The white
band got the Golden Palm (the best independent picture of the year!). A prophet
got Grand Prix at Cannes FF and The milk of sorrow was regarded as the best at the
Berlin FF. The only picture I haven’t watched yet is The secret in their eyes. Haven’t
even heard about it! So, as you see it’s an unpredictable situation and no one
can say anything for sure. This nomination has always been the most intriguing –
it happened very often that some not a very outstanding picture got the award.
It's a shame, really, that Hurt Locker would be in the same row with Titanic, Schindler's list, Amadeus, Godfather, Lawrence of Arabia, Casablanca and others....
This film touches upon a special for Americans topic "War in Iraq". It is a great tendency in the USA to nominate movies on some awards not only for thier director work, acting or music, but also for thematic component.
now we know the results... really, I was shocked that Avatar didn't take any reward except one - for make-up. and now we can also say that not always our predictions come true. but still, I'm shocked and angry because the film which took the Oscar doesn't deserve it. It just glorifies americans and their power all over the world, as usual, I should say. and also I don't believe in honesty of refereeing because Avatar has collected most of all proceeds for all history of a cinema. and... it takes nothing on this ceremony. for me, it is strange
Hm... It's very difficult to speak about Avatar. I have never watched such a beautiful film. It really deserves some special prize. But for me Oskar is not a very objective reward because as I like to say Tastes differ. So, we will see which film will get the prize on the 7th of March.
Can't but agree with your opinion towards "Avatar". And as for the last films that are going to be an intrigue haven't even heard about them. Could you tell us a little more about them?
