Stray dogs
Russians can go nutty when it comes to dogs. Consider the incident a few years ago that involved Yulia Romanova, a 22-year-old model. On a winter evening, Romanova was returning with her beloved Staffordshire terrier from a visit to a designer who specialises in kitting out canine Muscovites in the latest fashions. The terrier was sporting a new green camouflage jacket as he walked with his owner through the crowded Mendeleyevskaya metro station. There they encountered Malchik, a black stray who had made the station his home, guarding it against drunks and other dogs. Malchik barked at the pair, defending his territory. But instead of walking away, Romanova reached into her pink rucksack, pulled out a kitchen knife and, in front of rush-hour commuters, stabbed Malchik to death.

Romanova was arrested, tried and underwent a year of psychiatric treatment. Typically for Russia, this horror story was countered by a wellspring of sympathy for Moscow’s strays. A bronze statue of Malchik, paid for by donations, now stands at the entrance of Mendeleyevskaya station. It has become a symbol for the 35,000 stray dogs that roam Russia’s capital – about 84 dogs per square mile. You see them everywhere. They lie around in the courtyards of apartment complexes, wander near markets and kiosks, and sleep inside metro stations and pedestrian passageways. You can hear them barking and howling at night.

But of course strays live not only in Moscow but also in every city in Russia. I guess everybody agrees that disemboweling dogs, as Romanova did, isn’t a way out. So how do you think, how can we solve this problem?

This is all our culture and mentality. This is also a sign of underdeveloped society. SImilar incidents can happen anywhere in the world. One thing is definite - homeless dogs should not wander along our streets making them their own territory. If this is a human territory, then humans must do something about it.

Actually I don't see any problem here. Stray dogs are harmless, only they are not pure-bred and left by their owners. More than that, stray dogs always bring pleasure to many people living or working by them. Ok, even if it's problem for somebody, it's anyway impossible to eradicate all the dogs. And the main reason for their appearing on the streets is not the point that owners throw them away ofcourse, but the simple thing - every creature is used to breeding!

P.S. I didn't actully understand what about the terrier? What role did it play in the situation? Why did you mention it?

Well, to my mind the problem can't be solved immediately and with a wave of a wand. The problem actually concerns the mentality of Russian people and (I beg to say) their inborn irresponsible behaviour. It is clear that stray dogs don't appear out of thin air - people throw them away. Of course, there are instances when you have no possibility to go on keeping your pet, but throwing it in the streets is not a way out. The problem should also be handled at the government level.
