I congratulate everybody on the Day of all students. You can tell me that I am late with my congratulations. We all know that this day is celebrated on January, 25. But do you know that many centuries before the opening of Moscow State University, that was opened on this day - day of Saint Tatiana, the mentors of education were St. Basil the Great (Василий Великий), St. Gregory the Theologian (Григорий Богослов), and St. John Chrysostom (Иоанн Златоуст)? But why "were"? For many christians from Europe, Greece, Cyprus, Bulgaria, Northern Africa and others they remain mentors nowadays. And they have more reasons for this than St. Tatiana. Because these saint mentors were the most educated people of their epoch. They themselves studied all sciences of those times: ancient philosophy, maths, law, politics, the arts etc. and, of course, theology. They did not ignore all knowledge but learning about everything they chose useful information. They taught their followers to do the same. St. Basil the Great compared intelligent pupils with bees. He said, "The bee sits on every flower, but it drinks the nectar from the most useful ones and ignores the useless ones". These saints did a lot for development of theology and Christian philosophy. The time of their life is called The Golden Age of Christian thought. Today Orthodox Church is celebrating The Synaxis of the Three Hierarchs (Собор трех святителей): St. Basil the Great, St. Gregory the Theologian, and St. John Chrysostom. So, I congratulate everybody on the Day of all students.
