This time we are going to talk about the works by Elliot Erwitt. Born in Paris in 1928 and raised in California and New York, Erwitt has pursued a photographic career in journalism, fashion, and print advertisement. In short, he is mostly popular by his black-and-white pictures which have gained success all over the world. But actually, it is not possible to describe his photos briefly. Each of them reveals the most basic and candid human emotions. Elliot Erwitt could seem to be a photographer who is determined to caricature or even deride at some episodes. But he is far from being sarcastic. His snapshots don’t make us laugh because the object is being mocked on, but because we see some absurd moment or situation. His ability to catch the moment strikes the imagination. And more than that, his humor borders on surrealism which provokes ambiguity and a rich ground for deliberations.
His series of photos depicting dogs is marvelous in fact. These are not just sweet pictures of puppies playing in the yard; these are examples of a real talent. Being an astute observer of animals, Elliot Erwitt manages to frame the most unusual moments that have ever been viewed by ordinary people.
Another theme that is in great favour of the photographer is beaches. The magnificent atmosphere that reigns here draws the attention of the endowed master. To my mind, b&w images suit the communicative purpose to the best advantage as they (let me paraphrase the words of Elliot Erwitt) do not distract from the object. You may disagree with this standpoint (and I would like you to speak out your objections), but sometimes colours don’t hold any information indeed. You are also welcome to watch the videos that might help you understand the photographer better. The first one is quite short, the other may seem too long and tiresome, but nevertheless, it provides the whole scope of Erwitt’s views as a professional and as an artist.
I like the works of Mr. Erwitt. Speaking about the first picture, I can say that this is an idea of the moment of wedding. The moment when two hearts and two souls become the single one. And nothing can disturb them. I must admit, that I adore b&w photos. Sometimes they show thoughts, ideas, emotions much better than colored ones.
The moment when two hearts and two souls become the single one.
Well, yes, but I have a slightly different impression. In the moment when a 'cutless' entity is born and two people set up a family union, two individuals cease to exist to some extent. Here lies an impassable gulf between these two people and then with the help of marriage they try to cross this gulf. Yes, I really believe that married people lose a part of their uniqueness. That's why I often hear a phrase "I'm not looking for my tally, my mum has born me whole"
"...married people lose a part of their uniqueness..." You know, I agree, that becoming married we lose a piece of our own personality, but instead of it we get the whole personality of our wife/husband. I mean, that the family unit, you've told about is much greater and better than just two different personalities. But still, every coin has two sides.
Well, to tell the truth, your article made me surf the Inet and find more Elliot Erwitt's photos. Some of them are really unusual and I can even say weird. And I've noticed that he's made a lot of photos of dogs. (We've already talked about it)))) But I still wonder – why? I've tried to find some explanation in Net, but, unfortunately, I didn't manage. Can't you give me a hint?
Well, I agree with you, this strain is quite odd, but maybe, you will find some explanations in the second interview with the photographer. yes, it's long, but there are a lot of suggestive points in the discussion.
Well, actually, I've got some problems with downloading it Hope that soon these problems will be gone and I'll be able to watch the video. And Thank you for your hint
To tell the truth these photos are unusual, but really wonderful!!! They let us to think. Some words about the first photo. I think that photographer wants to show us a ruined love. This photo is full of cold emotions. It means broken hearts, disturbing mind. And there is no hope to return relations.
Thank you for the article and pictures. Really liked them. They're very unusual and rather thought-provoking. I think that each photograph depicts a little world, with its problems, ideals and time flow. They're worth discussing.
