TV-watching couch potatoes may be heading for early death.

Watching television, America’s most- popular daily activity after sleeping and working, can raise the risk of diabetes, heart disease and premature death when people do it for too long. For every two hours of TV viewing, the risk of Type 2 diabetes increased 20 percent, the risk of cardiovascular disease rose 15 percent and the risk of early death rose 13 percent, according to research published this week in The Journal of the American Medical Association. In the United States, people watch an average of five hours of television a day. Doctors suggest people reduce their TV viewing in exchange for activities that require more physical exertion to help combat an unhealthy, sedentary lifestyle.
“Spending too much time watching TV is bad for health. Couch potatoes should be aware of the health hazards of prolonged TV-watching habits. Perhaps TV programs or manufacturers should carry a warning label about the health hazards” said Frank Hu, author of the report and professor of nutrition and epidemiology at Harvard School of Public Health in Boston.
People need to learn to make healthy lifestyle choices. If they’re choosing to incorporate television into their life, they need to be mindful of the way they’re eating and their other activity throughout the day so they maintain balance in their lives!!!

In my opinion TV has an effect not only on the health level but on our communications with friends and family too.
Nowadays, every family can afford to have a TV-set in their homes. For the last 50 years television has become the center of attraction in many families. But what makes TV so popular? Is it really such a necessary facility?
Television plays an important part in our everyday life. We can't imagine spending spare time without it. Tv offers us a great variety of programs for all ages. They include comedies, soap operas, dramas, talk shows, horror films, documentaries, game shows and sport competitions. People of different interests can find anything to their taste. We can also be avare of the latest news in the world.
But on the other hand, TV may influence people in a negative way. Many people are glued to the screen. They watch series day and night. They forget to phone their friends and cancel meetings with them. It destroys friendship. As for families, you may loose contact with your relatives, which will cause misunderstanding and quarrels in many families. As far as I know, TV is harmful for our health, especially for our eyes, if you watch it more than 2 hours a day.
To sum up, the invention of television has changed our life. In my opinion it is useful and helpful for many reasons, but there is always a danger to become a TV addict. It is necessary to find a balance and know exactly when to switch it off. crazy

I totally agree. Eating all this unhealty food not only causes bad health but also spoils our figures. But I also agree that sometimes we need a day-off when we can forget about all these healty rules. E.g. I like drink tea with chocolate sweets when I watch TV. It's bad for my health but sometimes I can't help doing it.

I totally agree but sometimes you just need a day off on the couch in front of the TV watching some stupid soap opera, eating Pizza & Pop corn and drinking soda. All americans know that it's bad for their health but they feel so awesome! biggrin

Yes, it's so wonderful to have such a day off. BUT in my opinion it's enough to have one TV day every two week biggrin
There are a lot of healthy and interesting activities. And spending all your day watching TV is called "laziness", I think.
